Scoliosis is a condition that causes the spine to curve sideways, potentially affecting posture, mobility, and comfort. While symptoms vary from person to person, physical therapy can help individuals improve strength, manage discomfort, and maintain an active lifestyle. About 2% to 4% of adolescents are diagnosed with scoliosis, with most cases appearing between ages 10 and 15 during growth spurts. In fact, adolescent idiopathic scoliosis accounts for about 80% of childhood cases. However, many adults are affected by scoliosis as well as it often becomes more common later in life. Studies estimate that 12% to 20% of adults have scoliosis, and this number can rise to 30% to 50% (or higher) in adults over age 60 due to age-related wear and tear (degenerative scoliosis) or undiagnosed childhood curves. While these numbers may seem daunting, the good news is that a well-designed, personalized physical therapy program can help!

Benefits of Physical Therapy for Scoliosis

Physical therapy provides an individualized approach to managing scoliosis. Treatment may include:

  • Core strengthening: Improve trunk stability and muscular endurance to support everyday activities.
  • Postural training: Develop better body awareness and movement control.
  • Flexibility and mobility exercises: Address muscle tightness and enhance pain-free movement.
  • Pain management: Reduce discomfort and improve tolerance for daily activities.
  • Scoliosis-specific exercises: Techniques such as the Schroth Method may help selected patients improve postural control and manage their condition.

Although physical therapy cannot straighten every structural spinal curve, it can play an important role in improving function and quality of life.

What to Expect From Physical Therapy

Your physical therapist will assess your posture, strength, flexibility, symptoms, and activity goals to create a personalized treatment plan. For children and adolescents, therapy may be combined with monitoring or bracing when appropriate. Adults may benefit from exercises focused on strength, mobility, and pain management.
